[ Harley just laughs at how Jesse scrambles. She's done this in her sleep, and lifted people far heavier than Jesse, but she's not about to talk about that and risk his dignity being damaged. Instead, she easily uses her abs to pull herself upright and continues climbing. She almost regrets not wearing a skirt just so she could tease Jesse with the view from below, but then again that might not be such a good idea when he has to focus on climbing up a ladder.
It's only a minute or so before she ascends the rest of the rungs and reaches the looped 'railing' that leads the ladder up over the lip of the roof. It's a pretty traditional roof with the hum of the ventilation system, a few ports for exhaust fans and drains for when it rains. She finds a square-shaped duct looping through the roof and crosses the roof to sit on that so they don't have to deal with the rough, gravelly surface of the actual roof. ]
[ Harley's pants are tight enough that it's not a bad show, even without a skirt. Jesse grins as he glances up, briefly admiring that tight ass, but he quickly looks away again to focus on what he's doing. He may be an idiot sometimes (or a lot of the time), but he's not quite prepared to get himself killed because he was too busy staring at Harley's butt to climb a ladder.
But the climb isn't too long, and he follows her easily up to the roof, glancing around curiously. It's nothing special, but there's no one else around, which is definitely the most important thing. He ambles after her, hands in his pockets as he checks the place out, and settles in next to her on the duct, gazing out towards the horizon. ]
Yeah, it's pretty good.
[ Not exactly a skyscraper, but it's not like any of the other buildings are particularly tall, either, and they can see a long way. He sits there for a moment, just taking it in, before glancing at Harley. ]
Good spot, right? I been on top of the shipping containers to get a better lay of the land, but not up here yet. Thought it might be a cool view, though, since there's not much to block it. The buildings are mostly one or two stories.
[ Harley presses a hand to her brow to shield her eyes so she can see even further, even though the sun isn't really impeding their view. She's always looking for an escape; an out. Not that she wants to get away, but if she can help those who do? She'd do it. She's not as bad as people make her out to be. Sure, she's been involved in horrible crimes, but a majority of those were Joker's ideas. Her sort of mischief doesn't hurt too many people: shoplifting, burglary, and the like. Yeah, there's always a victim but she wouldn't choose to take a life if it didn't come down to her or them. ]
I think I got my lighter.
[ Harley pats her pockets and then remembers her little clutch purse. She's not used to carrying bags. She's used to having everything stowed on her person. But this is a date, not a stakeout. Harley rustles through her small purse and then hands her lighter over to Jesse. ]
You can do the honors. Since you brought me flowers and chocolate and all that like a complete sweetheart.
[ She means it, too. Once those flowers die, best believe she'll be pressing them between books or hanging them to dry for posterity. She's nostalgic like that. ]
[ Jesse nods, gazing out alongside her. He hasn't given much thought to escape. What would he escape to? Back home, where he had nothing and no one? Nowhere to live, a family who'd given up on him, no one to come through for him at his lowest point? He'd rather stay here, with Harley.
But the view is nice. He sits there for a minute, just enjoying it, and when she digs the lighter out of her purse and hands it over, he flashes her a grin, reaching into his pocket where he'd carefully tucked away his own present. ]
Yeah, next I just need to get you, like, a car or somehing and we'd maybe be even.
[ Because the joint she'd given him? After months of going unwillingly straight? Still the best present ever. He lights it carefully, taking a long drag and just sitting with it a minute, groaning in ecstasy before passing it to Harley. ]
[ It's probably more instinct than actual desire that's had Harley eyeing possible escape routes. She has absolutely no plan for what she would actually do if she managed to get out. She doesn't even know what's beyond the walls of this prison. Is this even a heavily populated planet? Do the aliens even actually live on this planet or are they simply using robots and broadcasting to control the prison population from a nearby space-station?
Who knows. It's not like she would be able to navigate her way home once she got out of here. But, there's still that little piece of her that nags at her to get out whenever she's locked up. It's like leaving a kid in a room with a big, red button and telling them not to push it. The immediate pressing desire is to do what you're told not to.
Harley hands over the lighter and watches Jesse as he readies the joint. ]
A car? Pfft. Remind me to bring you weed more often.
[ She jokes, but settles down when Jesse lights the joint, the pleasantly skunky smell filling the air around him as he exhales. ]
Good, right? I'm hopin' to find some seeds somewhere. Maybe I can request something from commissary; I don't know. A little smoke might make this place a whole lot better.
[ Harley reaches out for the joint, taking a long drag when Jesse passes it to her, then using her lips and cheeks to puff out short breaths, making some smoke rings and watching them stretch and distort before disappearing. She can feel the tingling behind her eyes almost immediately, forgetting how strong the weed in Gotham was. Not to mention it's been a while since she last smoked. She taps the ash from the end and then passes it back, sliding an arm around Jesse's back to lean into him a little bit. ]
I don't think I've ever had this good a time on a date before.
[ He hadn't even thought of asking for anything like that from the commissary. Given how eager their captors seem to be about drugging them up with aphrodisiacs every time they turn around, though, he thinks it's worth a shot. They just might go for it.
He grins lazily at her smoke rings, eyes already starting to go a little glassy. This is good. This is really fucking good. When Harley slides an arm around his back, he leans closer, draping his own arm over her shoulders. ]
Yeah?
[ It's good to hear that. It's not like he'd had any idea what the fuck he was doing, or if a prison movie marathon in a converted rec room was a good idea for a date. But so far, everything's working out perfectly. He takes another long drag from the joint, smiling down at Harley as he hands it back. ]
No? Pfft, you sure? I bet you had to fight 'em off back home with eyes like that.
[ Harley laughs and leans into Jesse's side a little, yeah she's joking but there's some honesty in there too. He's not exactly difficult to look at, and she has a hard time believing that nobody else bothered to notice that. She takes the joint back, puffing on it before she talks, voice thick as she tries to talk and hold the smoke in at the same time. ]
What were your favorite things to do at home? Like, for fun?
[ Not that they'd be able to do many of those things here, but she's curious. She wants to know more about what makes Jesse tick--what he likes. ]
Yo, I ain't saying I've never been on a date before.
[ He doesn't need her thinking that. What if she starts thinking the girls at home don't like him, and that there's something wrong with him and she should tap out too? Besides, it's not like it's true. He's had plenty of dates, though lately it's been more like hookups than anything so romantic.
He squeezes Harley's shoulders, looking down into her eyes and giving her a smile. ]
I'm saying none of the rest of 'em were as good as this one.
[ None of them were as good as her. He blinks as he considers his question, shrugging his shoulders. ]
Uh, you know. Just hanging out mostly, with my friends...playing in my band...
[ Before his band had dissolved into nothing, that is. He gives her a half-playful, half-sheepish smile. ]
[ Harley laughs and knocks her shoulder gainst Jesse's. Of course he's been on a date before. But she kind of likes picking at him playfully sometimes--just enough to get a scoffed response out of him. She just can't help herself. He's extra cute when he's a little huffy. When those blue eyes grow all wide and serious and that smile that's not quite a smile spreads on his face. ]
But yeah, none of mine were as good as this either.
[ She decides to give Jesse a break from busting his chops, smiling back up at him as he squeezes her shoulders. ]
Getting high's a good time.
[ On that note, she passes the joint that she realizes she's been holding onto for too long. Forgetfulness comes with the territory of smoking--sorry, Jesse. ]
If you coulda been or done anything you wanted, what would it be? Like, no restraints as far as schooling or training goes. If you could just instantly be anything.
[ Jesse rolls his eyes, shaking his head, but he's still grinning. She can mess with him all she wants, as long as she doesn't start really thinking...well, anything that might make her wonder if he's not good enough for her. Any more than what he's already admitted to, that is.
But Harley hadn't been scared off yet, and he smiles when she says none of her past dates were as good either. Better even than her Mr. J, and he must've had something going for him, before he turned into a total jackass, right?
He takes the joint back with a nod. Harley gets it. No judgement. But he pauses at her next question. What would he do? If he could do anything? ]
Uh, not work?
[ He scoffs a little. Pretty obvious, right? He glaces at her, hoping she'll be just as nonjudgmental about this. He's never really wanted to be anything. Not for a job. Jobs are work, sucky and boring. Something to be avoided. ]
I'd be, y'know. Independently wealthy. Win the lottery or something.
[ Wouldn't anyone? He hesitates, before adding a little quieter: ]
[ Dates with Joker were...different. They mostly consisted of various heists, and the few real dates she'd been taken on were mostly for show. To keep up appearances in Gotham. Show his face, that sort of thing. They were never really for her. But once upon a time, she'd enjoyed being around him enough that it didn't really matter what they were doing. She pushes the thoughts aside because now's not the time to be thinking about him. There isn't really ever a time she wants to be doing much of that. ]
It didn't have to be what you wanna do for work. Say you had all the money you wanted. What then? Just like, in life. I'd love to travel. I want to go rock climbing. I want to see sharks. Like, those boat tours they show on Shark Week where they chum the waters and use a fake seal to see how high they can get 'em to leap out of the water? Seeing that in person would be so fucking cool. I dunno, bucket list stuff.
[ Harley shrugs. There are a lot of things on her list, in spite of all the off-beat things she's already experienced, like saving the world from an ancient witch and having a hyena for a pet. There's so much more to do out there. ]
[ She has so many ideas, and Jesse can't help but admire her for them. And wish he had that much imagination. He squints thoughtfully, rubbing a hand over the back of his neck. ]
I'd go to like, Africa or Australia or somethin'. See all the elephants and dingos and shit. Climb Mount Kilimanjaro, maybe.
[ Have an adventure. It's something Jesse's never really been able to do, something he'd never really thought he'd get the opportunity to do. Even when he'd started making fat stacks selling meth, he'd mostly thought about using the money to get more drugs and girls. Or just stash it away, have it for an emergency in case he needed to get out of town. Not choosing to go anywhere just cause he wanted to.
Harley, though. If anyone knows how to have an adventure, it's Harley. He smiles at her, a little sad. ]
Too bad we can't go do any of that shit now, huh?
[ It figures. He finally meets someone cool, someone he could see himself doing all that stuff with. Traveling, exploring. Swimming with sharks. And they're both trapped in here. ]
Africa! Going on a safari and shit? That. Would be awesome.
[ She's not sure about Australia with all the shows she's seen about how many things there can kill you. Not that she's afraid, necessarily, but the whole 'spiders the size of your face' thing makes her shudder. Even Harley has her limits.
Harley lets out a sigh when Jesse mentions that it's likely they'll never get to do any of that stuff. Every time she ends up in prison, she never views it as a permanent situation. Not even when she'd been handed multiple life sentences. And it had mostly been for good reason--Harley's always found a way out somehow. But here, even with the promise of release after completing one's sentence sheet, escape seems pretty unlikely. She's not even sure where in the galaxy they're at, for starters. ]
Who knows...maybe we'll get out someday.
[ She doesn't sound so sure, but she has to cling to the thought that this isn't where she'll spend the rest of her life. Not that it'd really be that terrible. She's made some friends, and she met Jesse. That's more than she expected to happen when she first got here. ]
And if not. It doesn't hurt to dream, right?
[ She lets out a little sigh, leaning her head against Jesse's shoulder as she looks out at the view of the prison. It could be worse...it could always be worse. ]
[ It's kind of ridiculous, how much having Harley's approval does for him. Just her enthusiasm makes Jesse grin, that much more excited for this eventual African safari, something he'd never seriously considered in his life. Something he'd practically made up from whole cloth right then and there, because Harley had asked. But his stomach flips over at the look on her face, and suddenly he'd do anything to be there right now, riding around on elephants with her and seeing what there is to see. Discovering it all together. ]
Yeah, maybe.
[ Someday. He's still in no hurry to get back to the life he'd left behind, but if getting out meant still being with Harley, meant the two of them somehow getting that money and going on that adventure...yeah, maybe someday. He sighs too, warmth spreading through him when she rests her head on his shoulder, and he tilts his own head to rest against hers. ]
Nah. Guess not.
It's cool to think about, I guess. Even if it never happens.
[ Harley's not necessarily in a rush to get back to her world, either. Even if she's not sent right back to prison, what are the chances of her staying out? Gotham City has the tendency to bring out the worst in her, and she barely has to do more than sneeze the wrong way before she has fifteen cops surrounding her. Harley's notoriety is more curse than gift, when it comes to Gotham City.
But, maybe if she had the chance to start somewhere new where nobody knew about her or her past or her whirlwind romance with Joker? Maybe she could stay out of trouble. At least out of the real big, supermax prison kind of trouble. And even if she couldn't, there's a whole world out there just ripe for exploring. She wants to see and experience new things, and a lot's new to her considering the amount of time she's spent either behind bars, under Joker's thumb, or with her head shoved in books, studying. Harley hasn't had much time to just...be Harley, and figure out what that really means to her. She can only hope that when she gets that time to really find herself, Jesse'll be there too. She'd like that. It feels right when she thinks about it, as scary as that is.
She's trying not to get too ahead of herself. Trying to tread lightly, but she can't help how fast and hard she's falling for him, and maybe she's ready to start admitting to herself that that's what's happening. She reaches for Jesse's free hand, the one without the joint, and takes hold of it. ]
Maybe when...if we ever get through most of our sentences we can, like, coordinate so we hit the last one of the same day. Maybe they'll let us leave together. I don't know. I know that's...that's far in the future. I don't even know what's on your list, but. I don't want to leave here and end up in another universe and just...forget about you. You mean a lot to me, Jesse. It's...it happened fast, but I can't sit here and lie and pretend I'd be okay if I knew I might never see you again.
[ Jesse's been trying to rein himself in too. He'd been worried just about asking her on a date, terrified that she'd shoot him down, or worse, not want to see him again at all ever again. The last thing he'd wanted was to come on too strong or scare her off.
So when Harley talks about leaving together, about not wanting to forget him, he just turns to look at her, eyes wide. For a moment he can't even say anything. He feels like his heart's in his throat, in the best way.
Slowly, he shifts his hand in hers to lace their fingers together, squeezing tight. ]
I don't wanna forget you either, Harley.
I...I won't.
[ Somehow, however it takes, he'll make sure of that. Because the alternative, going back to his world and not even remembering that Harley exists, is unthinkable. He swallows hard, eyes still fixed on hers. ]
You really think...they might let us get out of here together?
[ Harley purses her lips in thought, eyes looking up like that might trigger some major epiphany. She squeezes his h ]
I mean...it's worth a shot, right? What's the worst that could happen? They say no, and then we're right back to what would happen if we never asked. Truth is, people from my world are different. There's a lot of people with superhuman abilities. So even if they sent us back to our respective homes...I might be able to find a work-around. Someday. I'd try anything, y'know?
[ Harley almost cringes. She's terrified of sounding desperate. But, Jesse gets her, and doesn't judge her for the things she's disclosed. At least not so far. There's a lot she still hasn't told him, but she has a feeling that that river flows both ways. ]
I won't forget you either, Jesse. Whatever happens. We'll...we'll figure it out, right?
[ That, at least, is something solid. Something encouraging. It's a promise she can keep. ]
[ He squeezes her hand again, bumping his shoulder gently against hers. Oh, they'll figure it out. If it's what Harley wants? It's definitely what Jesse wants. He smiles gently at her, leaning in close. ]
Even if they don't send us back together, we'll find each other. We will.
[ Somehow. It has to be possible, right? After all, the aliens had found them all and brought them here. He hesitates, biting his lip a little. He still doesn't want to come on too strong, but it can't be too much to say how he feels now, right? After her saying she wouldn't be okay if she never saw him again? ]
You're, like...the best thing that's ever happened to me, Harley.
[ Harley jokes self-deprecatingly, as to say he must have had it pretty rough if she's the best thing that ever happened to him. She smiles afterward, though, a little starry-eyed because she's certain that's the nicest thing anyone's ever said to her. Were it someone else, she might have laughed it off, but the way Jesse's looking at her and the way he hesitated a little before speaking has Harley believing Jesse. He wouldn't just say that for the hell of it. ]
I feel like that, too. I'm really happy that we met. Even if the circumstances are kinda fucked up.
[ The prison, the shitty food, the aphrodisiacs...even everything on his list he's still unsure of and not knowing if he'll ever get home, it's all worth it because it had led to meeting her. Who cares about the circumstances, compared to that? He smiles back, the slowly smoldering joint forgotten in his hand as he leans in and presses his lips to hers. ]
[ Harley mumbles teasingly against Jesse's lips, the smile on her face telling him that it's not a bad thing before she sinks into the kiss, letting the feeling make her body melt against his. Jesse makes Harley feel almost glad that she got tossed into this whole alien jail mess. They obviously would have never met otherwise, unless one of them happened upon some kind of interdimensional portal which, she supposes wouldn't be entirely unheard of in her world. Still, Jesse is her 'normal' in this crazy situation. He grounds her. Gives her something to look forward to. She's not sure what her time here might have looked like without him, and she doesn't even want to think about that. She's just glad that he's here.
Harley pulls back slowly, but manages to steal another quick kiss before she pulls back all the way, just to pull some air into her lungs. If she didn't need oxygen she's pretty sure she could kiss him into eternity. ]
That's about to burn you.
[ Harley says with a chuckle, lifting her chin in the direction of Jesse's hand, where the lit cherry of the joint is burning dangerously close to his fingers. ]
[ Jesse jumps, taking one last drag before quickly dropping the joint to the roof below them and putting it out with his shoe. Damn. He just feels bad that Harley hadn't gotten one last turn. ]
Sorry...I kinda wasted it...
[ He turns back to her sheepishly. He hadn't meant to let it just burn so long, but he'd been distracted. In all the best ways, of course. He leans forward to give her another kiss, and one last taste before the weed's nothing but a memory. ]
It was an awesome present, though.
The best.
[ Just like her. He gives her a little smile, meeting her eyes to communicate that. And if it makes him a sap, so what? He doesn't even care. Harley deserves every sappy thing he can think of to say about her. ]
No; don't apologize! I have a whole cigarette case full of 'em. Besides, I enjoyed the conversation.
[ Harley smiles over at Jesse, pushing her shoulder into his as he did before. ]
It's about the company, anyways. Not the drugs, y'know? You wanna head back to our snacks or grab 'em and go do somethin' else?
[ Harley looks over at Jesse, her eyes meeting his. She wants to kiss him again, but she staves off the desire so she can hear what he has to say. Her body and mind are thrumming with the weed and she's feeling good. ]
[ He smiles at her, grateful as always for how chill she is about everything, and presses his shoulder back against hers in return. ]
Yeah, definitely.
[ Definitely about the company, especially when that company is Harley. He hums, considering - and noticing how she catches his gaze and keeps it. Suddenly the last thing he wants is to be watching bad porn with a bunch of strangers, even with Harley there next to him laughing with him. ]
[ Harley asks, quick to agree even though they haven't exactly planned anything out. There's little she would object to doing with Jesse because all she really wanted out of the day was to spend time with him, so the details of where and what aren't that significant for her. Not that she hasn't been having a lot of fun with him already.
She gets up off of the ventilation shaft they've been sitting on and crosses the roof to climb back down the maintenance ladder, letting go and dropping down the few feet left between the last rung and the ground. She waits for Jesse so they can go gather their snacks providing nobody's snatched any of them up. She wouldn't put it past some people here. ]

What about you?

Date: 2022-07-11 12:05 am (UTC)It didn't have to be what you wanna do for work.

Date: 2022-07-12 04:41 pm (UTC)[ She has so many ideas, and Jesse can't help but admire her for them.

Date: 2022-07-13 01:01 am (UTC)[ She's not sure about Australia with all the shows she's seen about how many things there can kill you.

Date: 2022-07-13 06:20 am (UTC)Yeah, maybe.

Date: 2022-07-14 02:58 am (UTC)But, maybe if she had the chance to start somewhere new where nobody knew about her or her past or her whirlwind romance with Joker?

Date: 2022-07-16 02:10 am (UTC)So when Harley talks about leaving together, about not wanting to forget him, he just turns to look at her, eyes wide.

Date: 2022-07-16 03:02 am (UTC)[ Harley purses her lips in thought, eyes looking up like that might trigger some major epiphany.

Date: 2022-07-16 03:18 am (UTC)[ He squeezes her hand again, bumping his shoulder gently against hers.
Like ever.

Date: 2022-07-16 03:54 pm (UTC)[ Harley jokes self-deprecatingly, as to say he must have had it pretty rough if she's the best thing that ever happened to him.
[ Alien Horny Jail. What a trip. ]

Date: 2022-07-16 05:50 pm (UTC)[ The prison, the shitty food, the aphrodisiacs...even everything on his list he's still unsure of and not knowing if he'll ever get home, it's all worth it because it had led to meeting her. Who cares about the circumstances, compared to that? He smiles back, the slowly smoldering joint forgotten in his hand as he leans in and presses his lips to hers. ]

Date: 2022-07-16 07:07 pm (UTC)[ Harley mumbles teasingly against Jesse's lips, the smile on her face telling him that it's not a bad thing before she sinks into the kiss, letting the feeling make her body melt against his.

Date: 2022-07-17 07:34 am (UTC)[ Jesse jumps, taking one last drag before quickly dropping the joint to the roof below them and putting it out with his shoe.

Date: 2022-07-18 08:22 am (UTC)[ Harley smiles over at Jesse, pushing her shoulder into his as he did before.

Date: 2022-07-21 05:27 am (UTC)Yeah, definitely.
[ Definitely about the company, especially when that company is Harley. He hums, considering - and noticing how she catches his gaze and keeps it. Suddenly the last thing he wants is to be watching bad porn with a bunch of strangers, even with Harley there next to him laughing with him. ]
Let's grab 'em and go.
Yeah?

Date: 2022-07-21 02:28 pm (UTC)[ Harley asks, quick to agree even though they haven't exactly planned anything out.
